Acknowledgement: .. Much gratitude goes to William Mayo Ellis, Jr., who granted me permission to reprint parts of the copywritten book "Lowndes County, Mississippi, a photographic reminiscence 1830-1980", Written and Compiled by The Lowndes County Department of Archives and History, Board of Directors (1980) William Mayo Ellis, Jr., President, Mrs. George Eaton, Sec., Mr. George Eaton, Mrs. Ray Furr, Mrs. Allison Hardy, Mrs. Russell Husband, Mrs. Lena Brooks, Mr. Jack Donnell, and Mrs. Betty Wood Thomas, Director. The County Seat of Lowndes County, Mississippi is Columbus. The 2000 census showed a county-wide population of 61,586. Lowndes County, as recited in the establishing act, was named "in memory of the late William Lowndes". William Jones Lowndes (1782-1822) of South Carolina was a United States Congressman from that State (1811-1822) and an earnest supporter of the War of 1812. Henry Clay called him the wisest man he had ever known in the Congress.
Did YOUR ancestors play a part in the settlement of Lowndes County?? If so, why not submit a biography of that family and even send some pictures to go along with it?
