Bent Oak, Lowndes County, Mississippi Bent Oak, originally called Cobb's Switch, is the next stop on the M & O Railroad, West from McIntyre. The Moody families and the Rhetts lived here. Their houses and the station master's house were the only houses here. The importance of the railroad station here was a spur which went to the Prairie Gin Company. From 1900 on, the cotton from the plantations around was sent in wagons to be ginned. The ginner with a black crew weighed each wagon load, gave the order to such up the cottomn and then weighed the wrapped finished bale. In his book, he entered the weights before it left the wagon, then the bale and calculated the weight of the seed which had gone to the seed room. Then the railroad Bill of Lading had to be made. When World War II came, the manager had another job in war work and did not return to the gin. Mrs. Allison Hardy offered to run the gin for $500.00 and her husband gave her the job and the cotton was ginned. Mrs. Hardy was the first woman to run a gin in Lowndes County. Down the road to the west close to Billups Gate is Schular Grove. Schular Grove later became Green Pastures. Copyright © 2009.
