LOWNDES GUARDS COMPANY A, 2ND MISSISSIPPI RIFLES (VOLUNTEER) MEXICAN WAR 7 DECEMBER 1846 TO APR 1848 The following company history and roster is taken from the original muster rolls stored in the old military and civilian records branch of the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C. Company History The company formed on 7 December 1846 in Columbus, Mississippi. Mustered in on 5 January 1847 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The company left Vicksburg at night January 12 47 on board the steamboat Sam Dole and arrived in January 14 at New Orleans & encamped on the Battle Ground, left the Battle Ground January 30 47, anchored off the Island of Lobos on Feb 18 47, went ashore 19th & encamped on the island 3 days, was ordered aboard again by Maj. Gen. Scott, set sail from Lobos Feb 24, Anchored off Brasos St. Iago Feb 25, left the mouth of the Rio Grande, arrived at Matamoros March 5, left Matamoros March 14, arrived at Camargo 17th & encamped until March 26, took ? of March 16tgh for Monterey, arrived at Monterey April 6, 1847. By order of Maj.. Gen. Taylor May 26 at 11 o'clock took up march for Saltillo under command of Capt. Charles Clark commanding Regt. & arrived at Camp Taylor, Buena Vista, on Sunday May 30, 1847.
