Hazel Carter - May 8, 2003 Hazel Edwards Carter, 78, of Columbus died May 8, 2003 at Aurora Australis Lodge. Services were Saturday, May 10, at Gunter & Peel Funeral Home Chapel, Dr. Bobby Douglas officiating. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery. Mrs. Carter was born Dec. 16, 1924 in Clay County to the late Willie and Rebecca Blake Edwards. She moved to Columbus as a young child and attended the city schools here, graduating from the old Lee High School in 1943. She was an active member of Columbus Freewill Baptist Church for many years before moving to First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Crossley Sunday School Class. For several years she was active in Cub Scouts and, along with Betty Jane Kerby, received awards for Cub Scout leadership. Survivors include her husband, Ira Carter of Columbus; sons Randy Carter of Swainsboro, Ga. and Kelly Carter (Pam) of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; also grandchildren Kyle and Keri Carter of Cocoa Beach. Pallbearers were Dr. Clarke Bozeman, Otis Taylor, Ben Hardin, Bob Herron, David Nelson and Rick Humphries.
