Mary Alice Gibson
(December 22, 1913 - September 17, 2007)

Mary Alice Gibson Age 93 died September 17, 2007 at Dugan Nursing Home in West Point, MS graveside services will be held at Oaklimb Cemetery in Crawford MS on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Buddy Carroll Officiating.

Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home on Friday, September 21, 2007 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM

Mrs. Gibson was born on December 22, 1913 in Oklahoma to the late Dr. and Mrs. S.L. Hollingworth. She was raised in Columbus where she attended school and college. She married John Peter Hairston in 1934 and raised five children at Crawford MS where she was very active and played the organ for many years at the United Methodist Church. After his death she earned a BS degree from MUW and a MS degree from the Univesity of Tennessee in social science. She worked for the department of Human Services in many counties and later in the WIN program in Columbus until she retired in 1975. She and her second husband, Leonard C. Gibson, a retired postmaster and artist, lived in Crawford and then in Columbus.

She was a multi-gifted person who loved sharing her talents with many young and old. She loved playing piano, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and all sorts of crafts. She had a wonderful memory and enjoyed recalling history and telling stories, poetry, songs, and the way Columbus and Crawford were years ago. Her mother once said Mary Alice was blessed to have been born with a "merry heart." That Joy of living and her very active mind were with her to the end.

She was preceded in death by her first husband John Peter Hairston, her second husband, Leonard C. Gibson, brother James O. Hollingsworth, sister Marjorie Tims, son James Lamar Hairston, and granddaughter, Kizzie Hairston.

Survivors include: Son-Peter Hairston (Nancy) of Mt. Pleasant, TX; Son-Watt Hairston (Kathy) of Thompson's Station, TN; Daughter-Nanette Williams (Bill) of Calhoun City, Miss; Daughter-Alice Edwards (Bill) of Crawford, Miss; daughter-in-law-Frances Hairston of Crawford, Miss; grandchildren-11 great grandchildren-12

The Pallbearers are her grandsons - Lath Hairston - Dr. Peter Williams - Peter Hairston - Douglas Edwards - Johnathan Williams - Oliver Hairston - Will Hairston and great grandsons - Jeff Hairston - Rob Hairston - Bryan Laveck - Charlie Laveck.

The Honorary Pallbearers are -Larry Freeny - Billy Thompson - Tom Cash - Wayne and Lois Dean Eaves -Tom Jones - Randolph Lipscomb Staff of Dugan Nursing Home.
