Roberts' Assassins Arrested Two Men Found in Alabama Who Are Wanted in Mississippi Columbus, Miss., January 8, 1897. (Special) Telephone messages from Carrollton, Ala., tonight bring intelligence of the arrest and landing in jail there of a man supposed to be one of the bandits who assassinated John Roberts (on December 30, 1896), this county, one night last week. The message further says that the other bandit is surrounded by a posse in the Bigbee bottoms, and will be taken before morning. The man arrested answers the description of one of the men exactly. He is wounded and has confessed to being in the neighborhood of the killing on the night it occurred. Roberts was one of the best and most exemplary young men of the county. He was shot down and killed while attempting to prevent the robbery of his store. If the men arrested turn out to be the guilty parties, it is feared they will never reach this city alive, as the feeling is running high in the county, and Roberts' friends will avenge his death. ----------------------------
