Prairie Hill, Lowndes County, Mississippi History
Prairie Hill - Located thirteen miles southwest of Columbus, the now extinct settlement of Prairie Hill was a very important in its early days, being the center of a thriving farm community. It was a meeting place for all the people of the community who came early each Saturday mrning for their mail. The Post Office was established in 1839 in the back yard of Abram Belton, the first postmaster.
The old camp ground at Prairie Hill was the center of religious activities, political gatherings, and public speaking for a number of years, and thousands of visitors attended the meetings held here.
The meetings were noted for the generous hospitality of those who camped here and for the sweeping religious revivals.
