Information taken from handwritten notes from my Aunt Eva Marie
(Howard)
Atkins, to my mother, Dora Kay Howard, postmarked May 9, 1988.
James L. Campbell was born November 14, 1821, South Carolina. A family
member believes he came from North Carolina, but the earliest record we
have places him in Milo, Tn.[1] James married Mary Ann Moorhead[2],
born March 19, 1821, in South Carolina. Mary Ann was daughter of
Alexander and Rachael Moorhead of Anderson, South Carolina. The
marriage was on August 28, 1842.
Soon after the marriage, James and Mary Ann must have moved to Lowndes
County, Mississippi,[3] for their two sons were born there. Alexander
Daniel was born June 14, 1843 and James Lewis was born October 17,
1845.
James L. Campbell died 4/28/1846, and Mary Ann (Moorhead) Campbell died
9/21/1846. There is an account in the bible of Mary Ann (Moorhead)
Campbell, stating that Alexander and Rachael Moorhead left Milo on
November 3, 1847, destination Lowndes County, Mississippi, arriving
back in Milo on November 13, 1847. This trip, we believe, to be the one they
made to get Alexander Daniel (age 4) and James Lewis (age 2), since
their parents (James and Mary Ann) died in 1846 in Mississippi. (This
means that James Lewis and Alexander Daniel must have lived with
another
family in Lowndes County for about 14 months before their grandparents
picked them up and took them back to Milo.)
The US Census of 1850 and 1860 places James Lewis and Alexander Daniel
Campbell in Anderson, South Carolina with their grandparents, Alexander
and Rachael Moorhead.
